That Will Sure Win Over the Base (Not!)

Along with news of the McCain campaign staff shakeup comes word McCain's staff wants him to quit the Senate to focus on the campaign.

The governor of Arizona is a Democrat, so she would most likely appoint a Democrat to replace McCain.

The loss of McCain's vote on some issues, such as immigration, would be no loss to Republicans.

But let's think this through: McCain's most serious problems are with the Republican "base" he's spurned time and again. And his staff thinks that by tilting the almost-even Senate further into Democratic hands he's going to win more votes?

No wonder he's not going to win the Republican nomination.

Update: A commenter at Captain's Quarters found the interesting information that Arizona is the lone state which requires a special election to fill a Senate seat. The commenter found another law which specifies that if the Arizona governor fills the seat, it must be from the same political party as the person who has left office. So it's good to know that that is not an issue after all.

That said, one then moves on to wonder: Unless McCain has a very unrealistic perception of his chances in the race, he probably won't want to give up his Senate seat. In this case it now appears it actually might be a good thing for Republicans if he were to resign!

As you know, I'm no fan of John McCain's, but I find it difficult to believe he would leave his post in the Senate where his voice is so important on the war in Iraq. He is one of the strongest voices and he has been on record as stating that winning the war is more important than his run for President....

That's a good point, Cathy -- he deserves credit for getting it right on the war.

It'll be interesting to see what transpires --

Best wishes,
Laura
