Special Panel Will Investigate House Vote

A special panel will investigate whether, as Republicans claim, Democrats stole a vote Thursday evening.

According to The Washington Post, "The agreement to form a special committee was extraordinary. Such powerful investigative committees are usually reserved for issues such as the Watergate scandal..." The Post reports the House's Deputy Historian called the decision "incredible."

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, while denying wrongdoing, said, "I do believe a mistake was made. And I regret it."

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand, said, "There was no mistake made last night."

The committee will have subpoena powers. A report will be produced in September, with a final report due in September 2008.
