Johnie's Broiler to Become Bob's Big Boy?

The saga of Johnie's (previously Harvey's) Broiler, a classic Googie building in Downey which was partially -- and illegally -- demolished, has been chronicled here in past posts.

The latest news is there is a prospective tenant who wants to preserve what's left of the restaurant and open a Bob's Big Boy on the site.

That could be a win-win solution for all. The Mel's Diner which recently opened in the preserved Parasol building in Seal Beach seems to do great business.

This is good news. We used to have a Bob's right behind our house. Most Bob's closed and ours became Coco's (yuck for food and service). We would get our Bob's "fix" for a Big Boy Combo when stopping by the one in Diamond Bar about twice a year on our way to a camp in the mountains. Then in December of 2006 a Bob's opened in our area, Signal Hill. It has been doing very well.

I have fond memories of eating at Bob's growing up. I especially loved the Silver Goblet Milkshakes (which were more ice cream than milkshake, you ate it with a long spoon) -- I wonder if they are still on the menu of the Bob's that are open? The ones I used to visit are all gone. I didn't know one had opened in Signal Hill. Thanks for the info!

Best wishes,
Laura

My daughter orders a shake every time we go. Still in a silver goblet with a long spoon :)

The Signal Hill address is 1898 East Willow. It is on the southwest corner of Willow and Cherry sort of hidden behind a McDonalds (which is kind of funny). Coming from Orange County you would take the Cherry exit and go south to Willow and turn right. You have to pass Bob's on you left and then turn in a small shopping center at the signal.

Thanks for the directions! Our church is on Willow so I'm thinking maybe some Sunday we'll drive further up Willow for lunch. :)

I was talking to my dad and we think the Bob's I used to visit with my grandparents had been at Willow & Long Beach Blvd. We also used to eat at the one in Los Altos Center (we lived on the Traffic Circle when we were first married) before it became a Blockbuster.

I'm glad to know they still have the silver goblet milkshakes! Do they still have comics for the kids? :)

Thanks again,
Laura
