Coming to DVD: The Virginian, Season One

The Complete First Season of THE VIRGINIAN comes to DVD on May 25th, 2010.

The cover of the collector's tin for this 11-DVD set is really beautiful, as can be seen here. Click on the picture to enlarge for a better look.

Extras include interviews with cast members James Drury, Roberta Shore, and Gary Clark, as well as guest stars Robert Fuller and Peter Brown.

Two partial Season 1 releases, previously expected in March -- a date which may be pushed back -- are most likely to be sold in stores such as Costco or Sam's Club. The Complete Season 1 release has at least one extra which won't be available in the partial season releases, and the covers of the partial releases aren't as attractive, either.

I've been tuning in to some of the reruns currently airing on Encore Westerns. Season 1 guest stars include Ricardo Montalban, Robert Duvall, George C. Scott, Colleen Dewhurst, and Nina Foch.

At some point I'd like to get the book A HISTORY OF TELEVISION'S THE VIRGINIAN, 1962-71. I have always liked this show. When I was growing up I especially liked the episodes focusing on Betsy Garth (Roberta Shore) and Elizabeth Grainger (Sara Lane), but the entire cast is excellent. The show also has one of the best theme songs in TV history.

For more on this classic series, check out The Virginian Weblog or James Drury's official homepage.
