Coming to DVD: Sundown (1941)

Here's an interesting find on the Turner Classic Movies website: on August 30, TCM will be releasing an exclusive DVD of SUNDOWN (1941), one of Gene Tierney's earliest films.

SUNDOWN has a marvelous cast, including Bruce Cabot, George Sanders, Harry Carey Sr., Joseph Calleia, Reginald Gardiner, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Dorothy Dandridge and Woody Strode have small roles.

Extras will include photo and poster galleries.

SUNDOWN is a public domain film which has been previously released to DVD multiple times.

It appears that the VCI edition is the best copy available to date.

Hopefully the TCM version will be a restored copy. As of this point I haven't found any other information on this release.

SUNDOWN airs on TCM on August 14th as part of Summer Under the Stars.

It's great to see TCM DVD releases picking up steam. SUNDOWN will be followed by the September 30th release of a Douglas Sirk Collection, as reported here yesterday.

August 14th Update: On TCM today, Ben Mankiewicz described the DVD as "recently remastered from an archival copy."

I'll be recording it this Saturday! 1145AM PDT. This was one of my mother's favourite movies when she was a kid. She went to the movies every Saturday.
