Angela Lansbury, 1925-2022
Sad news to report: The great Angela Lansbury has passed away today.
Lansbury passed away in Los Angeles, just a few days shy of her 97th birthday.
The daughter of actress Moyna MacGill, Lansbury had a truly remarkable career, ranging from roles in the '40s glory days of MGM to Broadway to a dozen years on TV's MURDER, SHE WROTE (1984-1996) to becoming a Disney icon.
Lansbury was a three-time Oscar nominee and the winner of several Tony Awards for her stage work. She was also the first to perform the Oscar-winning song "Beauty and the Beast" from the 1991 film of the same name.
It's remarkable to me how young she was in some of her early films, given the maturity she conveyed; for instance, she was only 19 when she filmed THE HARVEY GIRLS (1946), seen above.
Below, she was incredibly gorgeous in SAMSON AND DELILAH (1949), which began filming when she was 23.
Although I never had the chance to see her perform on stage, I'm so glad I did have the chance to see her in person at a 2019 Academy tribute to her friend Robert Osborne.
Angela Lansbury films reviewed at Laura's Miscellaneous Musings: NATIONAL VELVET (1944), THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1945), THE HOODLUM SAINT (1946), THE HARVEY GIRLS (1946), IF WINTER COMES (1947), THE PRIVATE AFFAIRS OF BEL AMI (1947), THE RED DANUBE (1949), A LAWLESS STREET (1955), THE COURT JESTER (1956), THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE (1958) (also here), DEAR HEART (1964), DEATH ON THE NILE (1978), THE MIRROR CRACK'D (1980), BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991), MARY POPPINS RETURNS (2018).
Lansbury's other notable films included GASLIGHT (1944), STATE OF THE UNION (1948), THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1948), SAMSON AND DELILAH (1949), THE LONG, HOT SUMMER (1958), BLUE HAWAII (1961), THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962), BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS (1971), THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (1983), ANASTASIA (1997).

Laura, Angela Lansbury was a giant in the entertainment field. She was top-notch in everything she did. She left a lifetime body of work that we can continue to view and appreciate for years to come. Thank you ANGELA LANSBURY.
ANGELA LANSBURY R.I.P.
In my view, Angela Lansbury's best movie role was as Senator Iselin's wife and the mother of brain-washed Raymond Shaw in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962), in which she played an evil woman who was her absolute antithesis. She was nominated for the Academy Award for best actress in a supporting role in this film but unfortunately didn't win the award.
Angela was a marvelous actress, leaving a wonderful legacy of films and television work, and will be sadly missed.
R.I.P.
Walter and Mel,
Thank you both so much for sharing your appreciation of the great Angela Lansbury. What a performer.
I must confess I haven't yet seen THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, but it's on my "short list"!
Best wishes,
Laura
This makes me so sad, but she did leave an amazing legacy behind for us to enjoy. Time to go watch The Court Jester again...
