Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...The Hollywood Reporter polled over 300 directors, critics, and others for a list of the 100 Greatest Film Books. I own and/or have read many titles on the list, which includes my all-time favorite film book, DAVID O. SELZNICK'S HOLLYWOOD by Ronald Haver; it was published by Knopf in 1980.

...Coming to Blu-ray on January 30th from Kino Lorber Studio Classics: A restoration of SCARLET STREET (1945) starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea.

...As initially reported by Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits, Best Buy will cease selling physical media in 2024, not only in stores but online.

...There's a reboot of one of my favorite TV series, FRASIER, streaming on Paramount+. I don't have that channel so I don't know when or if I'll catch up with it at some point.

...Douglas Fairbanks Jr.'s former New York City co-op apartment is on the market for $1.75 million. The New York Post has a few photos.

...The Lifetime Channel is planning a Christmas movie with '80s TV stars Linda Gray, Loni Anderson, Nicolette Sheridan, Morgan Fairchild, and Donna Mills. The title is LADIES OF THE 80S: A DIVAS CHRISTMAS.

...For puzzle enthusiasts: Here's a great jigsaw puzzle celebrating mid-Century Christmas music. I also like one from the same company featuring Christmas book covers.

...It's fall cookbook season, and the Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond, has a new book out October 24th: DINNER'S READY! It's subtitled 112 FAST AND FABULOUS RECIPES FOR SLIGHTLY IMPATIENT HOME COOKS.

...Dennis Seuling of The Digital Bits has reviewed the new Warner Archive Blu-ray release of WESTWARD THE WOMEN (1951) and calls it "an unheralded gem."

...Kevin Costner has a new Western, HORIZON (2024), which will be released in two separate chapters next year. Part 1 will be out in June and Part 2 in August; a third chapter, not yet produced, may follow. Here is a teaser trailer.

...Coming on Halloween from TCM and Running Press: LENA HORNE: GODDESS RECLAIMED by film historian Donald Bogle. Bogle has just published an article on Horne and her '40s experiences at MGM in The Hollywood Reporter.

...Last summer the penthouse in the San Francisco apartment building Lauren Bacall lived in in DARK PASSAGE (1947) went on the market. I drove past the building at Telegraph Hill in 2017. It's just steps away from the house seen in THE HOUSE ON TELEGRAPH HILL (1951).

...ClassicFlix regularly publishes newsletters on their upcoming projects. Here is their latest news.

...MURDER IN THE MUSIC HALL (1946), just reviewed by Jessica Pickens at Hollywood Comet, sounds like my kind of movie. Vera Hruba Ralston skates, and the cast also includes Ann Rutherford, Nancy Kelly, Helen Walker, Julie Bishop, and Fay McKenzie, who I saw at a TCM Fest a number of years ago. A re-edited version was released a few years later as MIDNIGHT MELODY (1951).

I particularly connect her to the Joe McDoakes shorts and "B" Westerns such as Bill Elliott's THE LONGHORN (1951), THE MAVERICK (1952), and TOPEKA (1953); she was also known for the first season of TV's ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN (1952-53), where she played Lois Lane...Mark Goddard of TV's THE DETECTIVES (1960-62) and LOST IN SPACE (1965-68) has passed away at 87....Actress Piper Laurie has died at 91.
