Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...The 101-year-old Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood will finally reopen, after a long remodeling process, on November 9, 2023. Due to the removal of the balcony, the seating is greatly reduced, down to 516 seats. A 70mm festival will take place from November 10th to 21st. I hope there's an opportunity to return soon; I haven't been since seeing THE LONG HAUL (1957) at the truncated Noir City Hollywood festival on March 11, 2020.

...MeTV has announced its Christmas schedule of classic TV episodes.

...The Metzinger Sisters review Disney's BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS (1971) at Silver Scenes.

...Last week I linked to a Hollywood Reporter article on the "100 Greatest Film Books." Leonard Maltin has now written a very interesting column on some of the books which were most significant to him as a young film fan. I remember checking Bob Thomas's KING COHN out of the library when I was a teen.

...I was fascinated to learn that the true story depicted in Martin Scorsese's new KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023) was previously filmed as a silent movie, TRAGEDIES OF THE OSAGE HILLS (1926). Alas, it is a "lost movie" which is no longer known to exist.

...Surprising news: Meryl Streep has announced she is divorcing her husband of 45 years.

...Netflix is raising some of its rates.

...A hearty welcome back to my good friend Kristina at her blog Speakeasy. Looking forward to reading more of her great movie takes!

...I enjoyed Karen Burroughs Hannsberry's article on Marie Windsor for her "Noir Nook" column at Classic Movie Hub. THE NARROW MARGIN (1952), which she discusses, is one of my all-time favorite films.

...Thanks to reader Jane for passing on a UCLA Film & Television Archive page with links to Disney newsreels.

...Check out Linda Darnell Centennial Blogathon links hosted by Musings of a Classic Film Addict. Among the links: Erica discusses the tough, gritty film NO WAY OUT (1950) at her blog Poppity Talks Classic Film.

...For fans of Disney's ENCHANTED (2007): A Disney 100 ears headband is now available at ShopDisney. Over the years ENCHANTED merchandise has been quite rare.

...J.B. Kaufman's "Movie of the Month" is William Wyler's HELL'S HEROES (1929), which is special to me for its look at the Sierras silver mining town of Bodie before it became a ghost town.

...Coming to Blu-ray on Halloween: This year's films MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING PART 1 (2023) and RETRIBUTION (2023). Both are worthwhile, especially MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE.

...And coming to Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection in late November: Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 2.

...October 21st is the birthday of Disney animator-stylist Mary Blair, who was born in 1911 and passed on in 1978. In honor of Blair's birthday I invite readers to visit my post on Disneyland's 2011 Blair centennial display of her original artwork.

...Notable Passings: TV actress Suzanne Somers has died at 76...Lara Parker of TV's DARK SHADOWS (1967-71) has passed on at 84...Burt Young of ROCKY (1976) has passed away at 83...Joanna Merlin, who originated the role of Tzeitel in Broadway's FIDDLER ON THE ROOF in 1964, has died at 92. Her career also included a small role as one of Yvonne DeCarlo's sisters in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956)...Judith Balaban, who was one of Grace Kelly's bridesmaids in 1956, has passed on at 91. Years ago I enjoyed her book THE BRIDESMAIDS.

Thank you so much for the mention, Laura!

Good to know that The Egyptian will be reopening (bummer about the reduction in capacity, though). Fingers crossed that TCMFF will be able to use it as a venue.

Thanks for the welcome back! Yes, good news about the Egyptian, especially with whatever is happening over at the Legion (keep that story updated whenever you hear more please) they at least have another cinema back in the tcmff mix.

Gosh, Laura, I’m a big fan of Meryl Streep and your news about her impending divorce was quite a surprise.
Thanks for all the links.
