Power Line to President Bush: Meet the Minutemen...
...on camera, and tell them they're appreciated.
John Hinderaker of Power Line further suggests that the President should also give a speech acknowledging varying points of view on guest worker programs, and say that his first priority will be the borders.
Then he needs to announce spending cuts to go with the tax cuts.
Do this, and he will "reinvigorate" his Administration and re-win the enthusiastic backing of the Republican Party.
100% absolutely, positively correct.
In the meantime, the controversy about the U.S. government reporting border patrol activities by the Minutemen and other groups continues. Andrew McCarthy, a former federal attorney, responds with concern today at National Review:
"The American people should be told exactly what DHS’s component agencies have been telling Mexico. If, as DHS maintains, it is merely honoring U.S. treaty obligations, that is laudable and to be encouraged. If, however, our government is gratuitously providing a suspect regime with information about the First Amendment-protected activities of American citizens, the immigration issue is headed for a whole new dimension of controversy."
Update: The DHS responds to Andrew McCarthy, posted at The Corner. I'll be watching for further developments on this very interesting topic.
