Around the Blogosphere This Week
Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...
...In Kino Lorber Studio Classics news, the fine Western WILL PENNY (1967), starring Charlton Heston, will be out on Blu-ray June 27th. I wrote about it a couple years ago for my Classic Movie Hub Western RoundUp column...HUMAN DESIRE (1954), starring Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame, comes to Kino Lorber Blu-ray on July 11th...A July 11th release date has also been announced for the Dark Side of Cinema XV collection, which was first announced last summer. Titles are MAN AFRAID (1957), THE GIRL IN THE KREMLIN (1957), and the very good THE TATTERED DRESS (1957). I hope there will be more Dark Side of Cinema sets coming in the future!
...This June Kino Lorber will also be releasing a Blu-ray containing a pair of Ernst Lubitsch titles, THE OYSTER PRINCESS (1919) and MEYER FROM BERLIN (2019).
...There's more Lubitsch on the way from Grapevine Video, which is releasing SO THIS IS PARIS (1926) on DVD and Blu-ray this month. I really enjoyed it at the 2017 TCM Classic Film Festival.
...Cartoon Research celebrates the 75th anniversary of Disney's MELODY TIME (1948), which I wrote about here in 2020.

...A long-awaited new book in Don Ballard's series of books on the Disneyland Hotel is on the way. (Thanks to Keith Buczak for the information.) The title is DISNEYLAND HOTEL 1960-1969: THE LITTLE MOTEL GROWS UP. ...I was interested to learn a few days ago that dancer Bambi Linn is still alive; she just celebrated her 97th birthday. Linn danced in the original Broadway production of OKLAHOMA! and played Louise in the original stage production of CAROUSEL, then danced "Dream Laurey" in the film version of OKLAHOMA! (1955). There's an interview with her posted at the Rodgers & Hammerstein website.
...Great news from Powerhouse Indicator: This July they're releasing a limited edition Blu-ray of one of my favorite films, NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES (1948). I loved Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release last year, a beautiful print with a commentary track by Imogen Sara Smith, but given how often I watch this film I may have to "double dip" for the extras on the Powerhouse disc. The new edition includes a commentary track by Farran Smith Nehme and Glenn Kenny, a Screen Directors Playhouse radio production, a featurette on director John Farrow, and a booklet which includes archival interviews with stars Gail Russell and John Lund.
...In July Indicator will also have a limited edition release of JET PILOT (1957) starring John Wayne and Janet Leigh. The disc includes the film in two different formats; a featurette on the film, including the story of its long-delayed release; and a short, THE TOWN (1943).
...But wait, there's more! This summer will also see the Powerhouse Indicator release of Marlene Dietrich in SONG OF SONGS (1933), with extras including a 1937 Lux Radio Theater production and a featurette, and THUNDERBOLT (1929), starring George Bancroft and Fay Wray. THUNDERBOLT also comes with interesting extras including a featurette and an interview with Fay Wray.
...The latest news from ClassicFlix includes the information that the updated release date for their DVD of HI DIDDLE DIDDLE (1943) is June 13th. The first volume of the ClassicFlix Hopalong Cassidy series is due out around late summer, and a silent collection of Little Rascals films is coming late summer or early fall.

Then on June 25th there's a set of films directed by Andre de Toth, RAMROD (1947) and PITFALL (1948).
...Notable Passings: Ginnie Newhart, the wife of Bob Newhart, has died at 82...Eileen Saki, who played Rosie the bartender on TV's M*A*S*H, has passed away at 79.
...Please note there will not be a roundup next weekend on May 13th, when I'll be covering the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs. My post with the complete festival schedule is here, and you can read more about it in the Desert Sun. Around the Blogosphere This Week will return on May 20th.

Regarding Jessica's otherwise splendid review of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951), I don't agree that after the ballet the film comes to a grinding halt; the love story is perfectly and touchingly resolved, providing a most satisfying conclusion.
Three cheers for you, Mel. Agreed completely.
Saw in the comments to Toby's Adele Mara birthday post that her CATMAN IN PARIS is coming to Blu-ray in June. As much as I'd love more Adele Mara in HD, I'm not sure I'll pay steep Imprint prices ($43.14 pre-order on Deep Discount!) for a 65-minute film. I'll have to re-watch my "I know a guy" DVD-R copy and make a judgment.
Would it kill these outfits to put two short B-movies on one Blu-ray?! Anyway, informative Saturday column as usual, Laura.
