Noir City Hollywood Festival Returns in August
The 24th Noir City Film Festival opens at the Aero Theatre on August 4, 2023.
The Aero, located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, will host the festival for ten consecutive days, with closing night on August 13th.
The festival will be screening 24 films from 1947 and 1948, mostly from the latter year. Fourteen of the films will be screened in 35mm.
I've reviewed all but a couple of films being shown at the festival; here is the schedule along with review links.
August 4th: KEY LARGO (1948) and SORRY, WRONG NUMBER (1948)
August 5th: HOLLOW TRIUMPH (aka THE SCAR) (1948)
A DOUBLE LIFE (1947) and THE VELVET TOUCH (1948)
August 6th: THE HUNTED (1948)
CALL NORTHSIDE 777 (1948) and LARCENY (1948)
August 7th: I WALK ALONE (1948) and T-MEN (1947)
August 8th: CRY OF THE CITY (1948) and THE NAKED CITY (1948)
August 9th: BLOOD ON THE MOON (1948) and PURSUED (1947)
August 11th: RAW DEAL (1948) and HE WALKED BY NIGHT (1948)
August 12th: THE SPIRITUALIST (aka THE AMAZING MR. X) (1948)
August 12th: THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1947) and MOONRISE (1948)
August 13th: BODYGUARD (1948)
NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES (1948) and THE BIG CLOCK (1948)
This will be my 13th year attending the festival. It's wonderful news that the festival is back to its normal length this year!
That said, I'll personally be attending fewer 2023 screenings. I've seen many of the films showing at festival in the recent past; I'd happily rewatch all of them, but the parking situation at the Aero is deeply problematic. Given that I also have a lengthy commute from Orange County before facing the parking situation, I'm going to carefully select a handful of films I've never seen or have never seen in a theater.

Updates: Here is my review of A DOUBLE LIFE (1947), and here's a photo-filled look back at the festival.
