Quick Preview of TCM in May

Here's a brief preview of some of the interesting things coming to Turner Classic Movies this May!

The May Star of the Month will be Anna May Wong. The schedule is not yet finalized, but it currently looks as though around a dozen films featuring the actress will be shown on Thursday evenings this May.

An early Sherlock Holmes film, A STUDY IN SCARLET (1933), with Reginald Owen as the detective, will be among the Wong films shown.

Also of particular note in May is a "Special Theme" featuring Busby Berkeley films on Monday evenings. The TCM Spotlight for May is titled "Around the World."

The May Noir Alley titles are JOHNNY ANGEL (1945), NO MAN OF HER OWN (1950), THE KILLER IS LOOSE (1956), MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS (1945), and BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955).

In a nice touch, NO MAN OF HER OWN, in which Barbara Stanwyck's baby is a key plot point, will have its TCM premiere on Mother's Day weekend.

Also of note: THE ARGYLE SECRETS (1948), which I'll be seeing at next month's Noir City Hollywood festival, will make its TCM debut as part of a tribute to director Cy Endfield.

Filmmakers featured in multifilm tributes in May include Yvette Mimieux, who will receive a prime time memorial tribute, and Bing Crosby, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Capra, Fatty Arbuckle, Charles Winninger, Harold Lloyd, and Sterling Hayden.

May daytime themes include reporters, "plane trouble," '30s romantic comedies, and films with "Lucky" in the title. Cinco de Mayo will feature films set in Mexico.

I'm especially enthused about the TCM debut of MURDER ON DIAMOND ROW (1937), starring Edmund Lowe, as part of a day of espionage films.

As is tradition for TCM, Memorial Day weekend will be dedicated to war films.

I'll have more on the May schedule posted here around May 1st.

In the meantime, viewers can also look forward to Errol Flynn as the April Star of the Month!
