A Visit to Inglewood Park Cemetery

The weekend before the TCM Classic Film Festival I paid a visit to Inglewood Park Cemetery with friends who were in town for the festival.

Although Inglewood is generally considered to be a rougher part of the Greater Los Angeles area, we found the cemetery was lovely and well-maintained.

We began with a visit to Ella Fitzgerald. It touched me deeply standing here, as she's been one of my favorite singers since I was young. I especially love her Rodgers & Hart Songbook; I couldn't begin to guess how many times I've heard it.

Beloved musical star Betty Grable is with her mother. Grable was long married to Harry James, whose father is next to her. Last year I visited Harry James' final resting place in Las Vegas.

This harp in the Alcove of Music contains the last remains of Cesar Romero and his family:

Singer Ray Charles:

Screenwriting great Robert Riskin (IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT), who was married to Fay Wray:

Actor-Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, the father of Candice Bergen:

Jim Gilliam of the Dodgers:

Songwriter Nacio Herb Brown ("Singin' in the Rain"):

Cowboy star Hoot Gibson:

"B" cowboy star Allan "Rocky" Lane, who was also the voice of TV's "Mister Ed":

20th Century-Fox director Walter Lang, who made many favorites including MOON OVER MIAMI (1941) and STATE FAIR (1945):

Gypsy Rose Lee:

Sugar Ray Robinson:

William Thomas, known as "Buckwheat" in the Our Gang comedies:

Marjorie Woodworth, who was my most-watched actress in 2020, does not have a marker on her final resting place in the mausoleum.  Her husband passed away about 18 months after she died in 2000, and they apparently did not have children.

Marjorie was born and raised in Inglewood; her father, who is also buried at the cemetery, was likewise an Inglewood native and served as the City Attorney.  An Inglewood school is named in his honor.

Coming soon: Visits to Mt. Sinai Memorial Park and Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

A beautiful cemetery, Laura. I was struck by the fact that almost all of those people died comparatively young, certainly by 2022 figures. The one who did perhaps have a full length of life was Ella (and I agree with you about this wonderful, expressive singer - her Rodgers & Hart Songbook is timeless and fantastic).

Thank you so much, Jerry. That's an interesting thought on some of these people dying relatively young.

I have loved Ella's Rodgers & Hart album most of my life -- it even inspired a song sung at our wedding ("With a Song in My Heart").

Best wishes,
Laura
