Around the Blogosphere This Week

Miscellaneous bits of news and fun stuff from around the internet...

...VCI Entertainment is reissuing some of its previous Western releases on DVD-R. Visit their new releases page for titles. I'm uncertain if it's a new release or a reissue, but I'm delighted they're putting out a pair of Bill Elliott films I don't have!

...Fantastic news from the UCLA Film & Television Archive: A missing "Lonesome Luke" silent short starring Harold Lloyd, LUKE'S DOUBLE (1916), has been found!

...Coming from Kino Lorber Studio Classics in December: THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL (1965) starring Burt Lancaster. It will include the entire "roadshow" presentation with overture, intermission, and other music. There will be a new commentary track by Michael Schlesinger and C. Courtney Joyner.

...Thanks to James L. Neibaur for making me aware of the new Kit Parker Blu-ray release of THE ROUNDUP (1920) starring Fatty Arbuckle. It's the earliest surviving feature film shot in Lone Pine, California; I saw it at the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2015. Believe it or not there are still wooden fenceposts standing in Lone Pine which appear in the film! Here's a photo I took of them just last weekend.

...Here's Leonard Maltin's latest look at new movie books. I always enjoy these roundups! I'll be reviewing the Ernest Lehman bio, and I hope to get the Marion Davies biography very soon.

...I was pleased to hear Kenneth Branagh has a third Hercule Poirot film on the way. A HAUNTING IN VENICE is slated to come out September 15, 2023. Even better, the great Michelle Yeoh is one of the costars. I enjoyed Branagh's MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (2017) and DEATH ON THE NILE (2022).

...Coming from Disney Editions in March: THE STORY OF DISNEY: 100 YEARS OF WONDER by John Baxter and Bruce Steele.

...At Quelle Movies, Raquel Stecher reviewed the brand-new documentary BUTTERFLY IN THE SKY (2022), about the READING RAINBOW series on PBS. She screened it via the Nashville Film Festival. I get the best tips on new documentaries from Raquel!

...Toby has shared good news at 50 Westerns From the 50s: He believes the trail to his book's publication is winding down and he has a release date in mind.

...I enjoyed Robert Lloyd's new interview with John Stamos for the Los Angeles Times.

...CineSavant Glenn Erickson has reviewed THE RAID (1954) starring Van Heflin and Richard Boone. It's not currently available for home viewing; my only copy is a pan and scan VHS recording off Fox Movie Channel from several years ago.

...The KNIVES OUT (2019) sequel GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY (2022) will play in theaters for a week at Thanksgiving, then stream on Netflix beginning December 23rd. Alas, it's not playing in any of my usual local theaters. As I shared here last month, GLASS ONION has been well received by some critics.  Update: Cinemark updated the theaters showing GLASS ONION and we now have tickets to see it on Black Friday.

...And here's a cookbook coming in March: MY VERMONT TABLE by Gesine Bullock-Prado, sister of actress Sandra Bullock. She is the author of several other cookbooks and the memoir MY LIFE FROM SCRATCH: A SWEET JOURNEY OF STARTING OVER, ONE CAKE AT A TIME. Gesine had a short-lived Food Network series, BAKED IN VERMONT (2017).

...My copies of the new Christmas CDs LOUIS WISHES YOU A COOL YULE and WHITE CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY INN are on their way!

...Notable Passings: Robert Brown (seen at left), who starred as oldest brother Jason Bolt on HERE COME THE BRIDES (1968-70), has died at 95...Joan Hotchkis, who starred with William Windom on an early childhood favorite, MY WORLD AND WELCOME TO IT (1969-70), has passed away at 95...Michael Callan, who as Mickey Callan originated the role of Riff in Broadway's WEST SIDE STORY in 1957, passed on at 86. His films included THEY CAME TO CORDURA (1959) with Gary Cooper, Van Heflin, Rita Hayworth, and Richard Conte...Soap opera star Ann Flood has passed away at 89. She was on THE EDGE OF NIGHT for 22 years and appeared on several other soaps.

Got the Bill Elliott 1930s double bill and was very disappointed . Bill didn’t disappoint, just the scripts!

Oh, that's a bummer, Vienna! My copy has arrived (with Bill's last name curiously misspelled on the cover!) but I haven't had a chance to open the box. Ah, well, at least we can check having seen those movies off our Elliott lists!

Best wishes,
Laura
